Edmonton is a great city for new comers, not only for its booming economy, but its long tradition of hosting the new settlers with generosity and hospitality. As one volunteer at
ASSIST
Community
Services
Center, I got involved in the mainstream culture of becoming a ‘barn bee’, nick name for those who volunteered to build barns for new immigrants to
Edmonton 100 years ago. We, as volunteers to serve the public in the 21st century, also like the builders, busy at setting up smooth channels for effective communications between the individuals, the communities and the society. We feel more like builders upon helping the victims of May 12 Chinese earthquake, as we are building our hope, our dream, but above all, our reality and our future as we try our best to assist the Chinese rebuild their homes. As we know
""(if you can) watch the things you gave
your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with
worn-out tools;
…
And--…—you’ll be a
Man, my son!"
-- Rudyard Kipling
